Historic villa by the sea in Tuscany
The Domus Socolatae is a historic villa on the Tuscan coast, a charming B&B housed in an ancient liberty building just in the heart of Follonica town, in the Tuscan Maremma. The villa is placed in the central square devoted to the war Fallen, surrounded by flowers and centuries-old trees, right next to the Ghisa Church, Ilva foundries - the Factory Town known for its cast iron - known today as the former Ilva Area - and the Palace of the Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine recolling the same style and the ancient, precious artifacts.
The location, once a swampland, was a strategic one to establish the factory town to fuse the iron caming from neighbouring Elba Island and turn it into cast iron and Follonica was founded by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo just for this very reason.
The ancient settlement has been founded by the Appiano people of Piombino, who were also iron workers.
Everything revolved around the foundaries for more a century, therefore this is the real identity of the city: life, town and culture through the iron.
